New York area politicians and energy officials are moving ahead with what could be the nation's largest offshore wind farm in the Atlantic Ocean 13 miles from Queens.
The Long Island/New York City Offshore Wind Collaborative, a group of utilities and government agencies, said Wednesday it would request proposals next year from developers for a 350-megawatt wind farm near the Rockaway Peninsula that could cost more than $1 billion and involve more than 100 turbines.
Backers want the developers to finance the project and recoup their costs selling power to nearby utilities, beginning in 2015. The group said it had heard from 30 developers potentially interested in such a project.
The Long Island Power Authority, a municipal utility, has been trying develop an offshore wind farm for several years. Local opposition forced LIPA to shelve a 2007 plan for an $800 million project near Jones Beach. LIPA and Consolidated Edison Inc., an investor-owned utility, followed in 2008 with an idea to build a wind farm 10 miles off the south shore of Queens.
The new proposal would move three miles further from shore, and include support from multiple government agencies, including the New York Power Authority, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.
"While Europe is having lots of success with offshore wind, the U.S. has yet to do a project," said Kevin Law, LIPA's president and CEO.
