Intel Plans 8 Solar Power Installations

Intel is installing solar panels at eight locations in four Western states as part of its larger power conservation program. The new solar panel installations will generate about 2.5 megawatts of power and will all be online within the next seven months. The infrastructure announcement coincides with Intel being named the country's top purchaser of green energy by the EPA.

Intel in 2010 will continue its push to increase the proportion of renewable energy used in its global operations.
The chip maker is installing new solar panels at eight locations throughout the Western United States that will generate about 2.5 megawatts of power.
All eight solar power installations in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Oregon will be online within the next seven months, according to Intel officials.

US Must Transition to Clean Power by 2012 or Miss the Chance

If the US was smart, we would be funding a massive switch to renewable energy now, while we still can. By 2012 we could be out of luck. China is sitting on the only currently mined sources of many of the rare earth minerals needed to build electric cars, solar panels and wind turbines. Reasonably enough, having developed the resources, China wants to keep them for its own needs, that is has planned for.
But we are not smart. Even before the Supreme Court ruling this week, we already allowed fossil interests to dictate our energy policy by allowing the purchase of both policy makers and the formerly public airwaves to impede smart energy policy. In no other democracy is such corruption allowed.
The result is that we will be out of the ability to protect ourselves from peak oil from 2012 to at least 2020 (the earliest that new rare earth mines outside China might begin to come online). If we don’t pass effective climate legislation this year, we will miss that crucial transition window.
 Now that other nations are beginning to move into renewable energy development, the world will need 200,000 tons of rare earth elements by 2014. In just a decade world needs went from 40,000 tons to 120,000 tons, but there is not enough to go around. Faced with shortages, China plans to stop exporting completely by 2012.

Two of the Country’s Biggest Solar Power Plants Get Utility Contracts

Major power companies in Florida and New Mexico announced this week that they would start buying large amounts of energy from certain solar power producers soon.

In New Mexico, Southwestern Public Service Company (SPSC), a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, said that it would buy 50 MW of solar power from SunEdison. From the solar panels being installed on five 10-MW sites, the electricity generated will be able to power 10,000 homes.

In Florida, at practically the same time, Tampa Electric Company received approval from the Florida Public Service Commission to purchase solar power from Energy 5.0’s planned 25-MW plant in Polk County.

These solar power plants will be two of the biggest in the nation when completed. They are expected to offset carbon emissions by millions of tons.

Solar Panels to Generate Power Atop Smith College's Campus Center

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – In a few weeks, solar panels will be mounted on the roof of the Smith College Campus Center to produce clean energy and reduce the college’s operating costs while lowering carbon emissions.
Throughout the next 20 years, the system will reduce carbon emissions by 238 metric tons, which is equivalent to the carbon that would be removed by planting 215 acres of trees.
“I am thrilled that we are able to place this demonstration of renewable power on the building that is the crossroads of our campus,” said Dano Weisbord, Smith’s environmental sustainability director.

The electricity produced by the 130 solar panels will be approximately equivalent to the power needed to run the Campus Center Café. Installed by Borrego Solar Systems Inc., the panels will be located on the southwest side of the roof, where the Café and the Carroll Room are located.

The solar system will be financed through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with renewable energy marketer and developer, Community Energy, Inc.

Under the agreement, Community Energy will own and operate the $240,000 system, which enables the college to take advantage of the renewable power source without funding the system’s purchase up front. Community Energy will sell Smith electricity produced by the system at a locked-in rate for 20 years, insulating the college from rising energy costs.
