Universities Add Wind Power

Two universities — Southwestern University and the University of Maryland — are planning to get their electricity from wind power, while Texas Tech University has it sights set on a research wind farm in partnership with the National Nuclear Security Administration, and the University of Maine plans on designing and testing components for deep water offshore wind turbines.
Southwestern University will meet all of its electricity needs over the next 18 years from two wind farms, thanks to an agreement with the city of Georgetown, Texas. The wind power will be provided through AEP Energy Partners, a subsidiary of American Electric Power, reports North American Wind Power.
These two wind farms, comprised of 151 wind turbines, each can generate between 0.7 and 2.3 megawatts (MW) of electricity, reports North American Wind Power. The initial contract is for five years and is renewable through 2028, according to the article.
The University of Maryland plans to use the generated electricity from a long-planned $131-million wind farm project in West Virginia, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Wind power developer, US Wind Force, has received site approval from state regulators and is ready to start construction on its first wind farm development as soon as a purchase agreement is signed with the university, according to the article.
US Wind Force began working on the Pinnacle project in mid-2002, and is expected to generate as much as 55 million watts of electricity, according to the newspaper.

As well, the growth in the offshore sector, which has lagged the onshore sector, will continue to develop and grow as more governments and power generation companies locate areas where the wind energy warrants wind farm development.

Wind Power a Viable Energy Source

In 2010, the global acceptance of wind power as a viable alternative energy source is closely related to the capability of the international community and governments of all countries to negotiate and agree upon legally binding terms on limiting greenhouse gasses.
While Copenhagen 15 did not result in any binding agreements on limiting greenhouse gasses, wind power was represented by a large wind turbine erected on-site, a massive rotor blade, and photographs of onshore and offshore farms.

European Wind Power

In Europe, which has a much longer experience with the capability of wind power to generate electrical energy, than North America, wind energy has become a driving force, and the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), the voice of the European wind industry, reports that it now has over 600 members from almost 60 countries, with a 90 percent share of the world wind power market. Members include manufacturers, plus component suppliers, research institutes, wind and renewables associations, developers, electricity providers, finance and insurance companies and consultants
European wind power will continue to grow as the older and antiquated onshore grid systems are enhanced and a dedicated offshore grid is established.

LCRA triples wind power capacity

The Lower Colorado River Authority tripled its wind-generated power capacity today, completing an 18-year power purchase agreement with Chicago, Ill.-based E.ON Climate & Renewables North America.
Under the agreement, LCRA will assume the entire output from the second phase of E.ON's Papalote Creek wind farm, or about 200 megawatts of power. The 87-turbine farm is expected to begin generating power next year and create enough energy for about 45,000 homes continuously.
The wind farm is about 30 miles north of Corpus Christi in San Patricio County, and is the company's second South Texas power project.
“This project is expected to produce its greatest output during periods of peak usage, which is truly an exceptional benefit,” E.ON North America CEO Steve Trenholm said.
LCRA has participated in wind power generation for 15 years beginning with Texas’ first commercial project of this kind in 1995.
LCRA purchases and generates power from water, wind, coal and natural gas, and sells it wholesale to about 40 cities and electric cooperatives that serve more than 1.1 million Central Texans.

Wind power contracts get regulator's OK

The Illinois Commerce Commission approved a plan to solicit proposals for 20-year contracts to buy power from wind farms on behalf of the state’s utility customers despite critical comments a majority of the commissioners made earlier this month about the idea.
In a victory for wind power developers, the ICC voted 3-1 to allow the Illinois Power Agency, which buys electricity on behalf of customers of Commonwealth Edison Co. and Ameren Corp., to negotiate long-term deals with renewable power developers for up to 3.5% of the utilities’ electricity needs.
IPA Executive Director Mark Pruitt recently added the long-term renewable contracts to his power purchasing plans for 2010 at the behest of Gov. Pat Quinn, who wants the state to more actively promote wind farms in Illinois. At current low energy prices, the cost of wind power is considerably higher than market, and developers say they can’t get financing for projects without long-term contracts. The pacts, for which wind power developers lobbied hard, also were backed by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Southern Africa Turns to Wind to Improve Alternative Energy Supplies

SADC Member States are slowly turning to wind power to boost production and meet the ever-growing demand for electricity in the region, as the need for cleaner and alternative energy sources gains momentum.

Among the countries leading the search on how to harness the huge wind potential that lies untapped in the region areMadagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Tanzania. Sub-Saharan Africa has the potential to provide more than 170 gigawatts (GW) of additional power generation capacity - far more than the sub-region's current installations through exploiting "low-carbon" energy sources such as wind, hydro and solar, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Wind energy, which involves using air to turn turbines and generate electricity, is regarded as one of the most reliable and clean forms of power that does not pollute the environment compared to other forms such as thermal. Wind farms are also relatively easier to construct - as it takes only a year to build one with a capacity of 100 megawatts (MW). Because of this, SADC Member States are scaling up their efforts to exploit the alternative source of energy that has emerged as one of the most lucrative source of "carbon financing" under the Clean Development Mechanism. South Africa plans to commission at least 400 MW of wind power by independent power producers within the next three years. Most of the plants will be located along the West Coast that has the potential to generate about 10,000 MW of electricity.

'Homegrown power': $100M Bedford project may bring economic boost

BEDFORD — Construction could begin in the spring on the first wind farm in Bedford County, a $100 million facility proposed for the top of the Dunning and Evitts mountain range.

Iberdrola Renewables Inc. of Portland Ore., has filed a construction permit application with the state Department of Environmental Protection and review is under way for the Dunning Mountain wind project.

The application spells out Iberdrola’s plans to build 25 windmills stretching about four miles in parts of Bedford, East St. Clair, King and South Woodbury townships.

It will impact about 550 acres with just less than 100 acres listed as “disturbed,” the company’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit spells out.

Iberdrola spokesman Paul Copleman said the company is working to provide clean energy through the Dunning Mountain project and others.

“We are committed to setting a high standard in the industry for responsibly developing wind power,” he said. “This project will create clean, homegrown power and substantial economic benefits for the area.”

The 400-foot-tall windmills will generate a combined total of 48 megawatts, or the electricity needed to power as many as 14,000 homes. Estimates are one megawatt powers between 255 and 300 homes.

Described as the world’s largest owner and operator of renewable energy systems, Iberdrola has been planning the farm since 2005, when it built four wind towers to determine the velocity and consistency of the mountaintop wind. It should be operational by late 2011.
